A.  MISSION

Mission of the Department

  • Produce graduates  in  Sociology who are capable  of integrating social  theory

               Research and practice

  • Train  manpower  knowledgeable  of the  objective conditions of the  country and

capable of contributing to further understanding of those conditions;

  • Produce graduates  who are capable  of participating in  research  aimed at  the   identification  of the  causes  and  consequences of poverty and  related  social

               Problems

  • Produce graduates  who  will have the  basic  preparation  for participating  in  the

Formulation of appropriate social policies and programs designed

  • Equip  students with  the knowledge,  professional  skills  and  attitudes  necessary

for working with  and  mobilizing individuals,  groups  and  communities,  from

diverse  cultures  and  multiple  perspectives,  for purposes  of social  development

  • Increase the  capacity of graduates  for independent  or collaborative and multi-disciplinary research, and  cross-cultural  understanding to  promote processes  of

The prior mission of Sociology Department at Wolkite University is to produce professionals trained in the field of Sociology who can serve in various governmental, Non-governmental, public and private organizations involved in the development of society.  The program is to be one of the best department contribute for development of society in Ethiopia and well known program in East

I.                    PROGRAM PROFILE

  • Duration of the study

The program takes three years with 6 successive semesters for students to complete their study.

  • Admission requirements

Students  admitted  directly  from  secondary  school  are  required  to  meet  the  national  higher education enrollment criteria of that  year.  Students placed to the college of social sciences and humanities can join the program on competitive base.

  • Graduation Requirements

Students registered in the Department of Sociology must take a total of 180 ECTS. A student is  required to have a minimum CGPA of 2.00  upon graduation  without any Fx  and F grade in any  of the modules/courses.

  • Degree Nomenclature

Upon graduation, students shall be offered a Bachelor of Arts (B.A) Degree in Sociology. The degree nomenclature in Amharic shall be የአርት ባቸለር ድግሪ በሶሲዮሎጂ”.

  • Quality Assurance

Internal  audit  as  per  the  guideline  set  by  the  university  will  be  employed  to  follow  up  the  learning- teaching process and to control the quality of the outcome.

  • Method of Assessment and Evaluation Mechanisms

As  per  the  nationally  harmonized  academic  policy,  50%  of  the  course  assessment  will  be  generated  from  continuous  assessment  (at  least  4-5  continuous  assessment  methods)  and  the  remaining 50% shall be for the final examination. The continuous assessment methods as per the course nature include test, assignment, presentation, field report and quiz.
