Background

Wolkite University (WKU) is the emerging public higher education institution of Ethiopia established in 2011. It is situated in the outskirts of Wolkite town, the capital town of Gurage zone, which is located 158 km west of Addis Ababa. Regardless of its young age, it is flourishing and growing fast in academic programs’ diversity, research activities, community engagement, infrastructure development, and accessibility of facilities. Currently, WKU is running with more than 14,000 enrolled students in different modalities. Number of experienced and qualified employees in different academic ranks is showing dramatic increment. The University, apart from undergraduate programs, has been highly engaged in expansion and diversification of graduate programs. School of Graduate Studies has been launched in 2015 with 3 programs (Accounting and finance, MBA, and Development economics). It is now showing visible progress in program expansion and quality education.

On the basis of its mandates in the areas of teaching, research and outreach or community services, WKU has clearly defined its vision, mission and goal within the key objectives which will shape its future development into progressive performance.

Vision

The School of Graduate Studies of WKU has envisioned being one of the top 10 School of Graduate Studies of East African Universities in 2035.

Mission

The mission of Graduate Studies of WKU is to produce graduates who are knowledgeable, attitudinally mature and practically innovative; and also to promote high level graduate studies in various disciplines and modalities to make the university competitive in today’s dynamic phenomena of the globe.  Its mission includes supplying relevant and demanded technology and knowledge that address national and community level development problem to help make operations of the government and non-government organizations efficient, effective and competitive.

Goal

The overall goal of Graduate Studies of WKU is to evolve as an autonomous and independent academic and research institution by focusing on:

  • preparing knowledgeable, skilled, and attitudinally mature graduates in numbers with demand-based proportional balance of fields and disciplines so that the University shall become nationally and internationally competitive
  • promoting and enhancing research focusing on knowledge and technology transfer consistent with the country's priority needs
  • designing and providing community and consultancy services that shall cater to the developmental needs of the country.

Admission requirements

  • The applicant must have completed the academic requirements for the bachelor’s degree.
  • Submission of filled application form
  • Submission of letter of sponsorship from government or non-governmental organization
  • Applicant must satisfactorily pass the entrance examination to be administered by the concerned department.
  • The department/school graduate committee may include additional admission requirements in conformity with the University’s rules and regulations and upon approval by council of postgraduate program.
  • Foreign applicants should present academic records equivalent to accredited Ethiopian higher learning institutions and pass the entrance examination.
