An Overview of Department of Music

The Department of Music at Wolkite University is a dynamic and culturally rooted academic unit under the College of Social Sciences and Humanities. Established to preserve, promote, and innovate within Ethiopia’s diverse musical traditions, the department is committed to developing creative, competent, and culturally aware musicians, educators, and researchers.

The department offers practical and theoretical instruction in Ethiopian and world music, music composition, performance, ethnomusicology, and music education. Through a balance of academic study and artistic practice, it nurtures talent while contributing to cultural preservation, creative industries, and national identity.

In alignment with Wolkite University’s mission, the Department of Music also plays an essential role in community engagement, cultural documentation, and the promotion of music as a medium of education, communication, and social transformation.

Objectives/Goals

  1. Train Skilled Musicians and Music Educators: Develop graduates with practical and theoretical expertise in performance, composition, music teaching, and research.
  2. Promote Ethiopia’s Musical Heritage: Document, preserve, and disseminate traditional, indigenous, and contemporary Ethiopian musical expressions.
  3. Enhance Cultural Identity and Artistic Expression: Foster appreciation of music as a vital element of cultural identity, personal expression, and national development.
  4. Support Research and Innovation in Music: Encourage interdisciplinary research in ethnomusicology, music theory, history, and technology.
  5. Build Capacity in Music Education and Outreach: Contribute to national efforts in arts education by preparing qualified music teachers for schools, colleges, and community institutions.
  6. Strengthen Community Engagement and Cultural Exchange: Use music as a tool for community building, social awareness, and intercultural understanding.

Duties and Responsibilities

Academic Programs

  • Provide undergraduate degree programs in Music, covering areas such as music theory, composition, ethnomusicology, vocal and instrumental performance, and music education.
  • Deliver studio-based and classroom instruction, incorporating both traditional and modern teaching methods.
  • Supervise students in their research, recital performances, and community music projects.

Artistic Performance and Practice

  • Organize student and faculty performances, concerts, cultural shows, and exhibitions.
  • Encourage ensemble work including choirs, orchestras, traditional music groups, and fusion bands.

Research and Publication

  • Conduct research on indigenous music systems, musical instruments, performance traditions, and music pedagogy.
  • Publish in academic journals, produce audio-visual materials, and contribute to national archives and documentation centers.

Community Outreach and Cultural Promotion

  • Offer music workshops and performances for schools, cultural centers, and local communities.
  • Collaborate with cultural institutions, NGOs, and media to promote music for education, peacebuilding, and development.

Curriculum Development and Quality Assurance

  • Continuously revise and improve the music curriculum to reflect global trends, technological advancement, and local needs.
  • Ensure quality teaching, learning, and assessment aligned with national and international standards.

Capacity Building and Training

  • Provide training for music teachers, cultural experts, and practitioners through short courses and certification programs.
  • Develop teaching aids and educational materials for schools and community programs.

Resource and Facility Management

  • Maintain and enhance music practice rooms, instruments, sound recording studios, and performance halls.
  • Ensure the availability of traditional and modern musical instruments for teaching and performance.
